DIY Personalized Mini Terrarium

Terrariums are a wonderful way to bring nature indoors. A terrarium is a great addition to your home or office decor. Today I'm sharing with you a quick and easy diy project, to create your own personalized mini terrarium. These also make wonderful gifts for friends, family, or co-workers!

Personalized Mini Terrariums

You will need just a few items to create your own Mini Terrarium.  You may find that you have quite a few of the items in your craft supplies and your own backyard!

Supplies:

  • Glass Container with Lid
  • Pea sized Stones or Gravel
  • Potting Soil
  • Miniature sized Plants (Ferns, Viola, Ivy, Moss...)
  • Glass Seed Beads
  • Miniature Items for Personalization (Beads, Buttons, Miniature Furniture, Pins...)
If you don't have these items around the house, you can find them at your local craft store, garden center or super store.

Tools Needed:

Scissors, Tweezers (Long), Chopstick, Spray Bottle and Paper Towels.  You can substitute a fork if you don't have the tweezers or chopstick.

Once you have all your supplies and tools gathered up, it's time to get started!

Select the glass container you would like to use.

In this example, I used a glass container I had purchased from the craft store.  The container did not have a lid, so I used the lid from a jar candle I have.

By all means, don't be afraid to get creative, mix and match if need be!

Here are the steps to creating your Mini Terrarium, once you have decided on a container.

  1. Place a layer of gravel in bottom of container.  Mist with water.
  2. Add a layer of potting soil.  Approximately an inch or two.
  3. Position plants in soil, add more soil if needed.
  4. Position moss, if desired.

5.  Mist plants and moss well, with water.
6.  Sprinkle seed beads for a magical touch!
7.  Place additional items for a personalized touch.
8.  Mist inside of glass lid with water and place on container.

Now enjoy your creation!

To maintain your terrarium, be sure to place out of direct sunlight, mist with water as needed and only remove lid when it needs watering.

Here is a beach inspired Mini Terrarium I created for a friend.

I  would love to hear about the theme you will be choosing for your Mini Terrarium!  Even better, visit me on Facebook and share a photo of your creation!

Until next time...

With Aloha,
                Jane

  5. I had a terrarium when I was a little girl. They were really "in" back in the day and I think we bought mine at Kmart! I love these ideas and might just have to revisit my childhood. Pinning.
